Knowledge Management using wikis

Wikis are one of the most fascinating technologies of the past few years on the web. Wikis fulfill the vision of a "Writable Web." Still there is more to it: wikis revolutionize how we work together. They are a paradigm shift in how we use media to share our ideas with one another.

Wikipedia's success helped wikis break into the mainstream, however that is just one application of wiki software. This website is also run by a wiki, although one could at first suppose there was a conventional Content Management System behind it.

Wikipedia shows why wikis work better than previous Content and Knowledge Management Systems: knowledge should not just be filed away - placed in prefabricated hierarchies - the access being bureaucratically guarded. Knowledge grows and evolves, and wikis do not stand in the way.

To make Knowledge Management possible for the general public, the i3G Institute supports JSPWiki development through various subprojects:

• Wiki Map Plugin - Wiki visualization with topic map graphs
• Google Maps Plugin - Embedding geodata in wikis
• Wiki SpreadSheet Filter - Calculating in wikis
• Wiki Markup Standard - Standardization specification (Creole)
• LatexPlugin - Exporting wiki contents to PDF documents
